Lisa struggled in the grasp of her captor. The cable ties bit into her skin as she twisted and turned, flexing her fists.

“Quit it.”

She strained her neck to get a better look at Jimmy. He was tall and lean, with solid muscle stretching his tight-fitting shirt. He glowered at her, shoving her forward. Unable to stop herself, Lisa hit the ground hard, pitching from her knees onto her stomach.

“Leave her alone,” Abigail whimpered. Lisa struggled back to her feet as footfalls approached.

“Well?” Jimmy asked.

“They got away.” Carver stopped in front of Lisa. “Who else do you have with you?”

“Nobody.”

He seized a handful of her hair and yanked her closer until they were almost nose-to-nose.

“Tell me.”

Lisa smiled, offering nothing but a gobbet of spit in his face. Carver recoiled, wiping his eye. Then he retaliated with a knee to her stomach. Lisa doubled over, gasping to refill the air blasted from her body.

“You won’t get anything out of her, kid,” said Gus Razor. “She’s as stubborn as an ox.”

“Is she really?” Carver gripped her chin, forcing her to stand upright again. “I’m going to have fun breaking you.” He then turned his attention to Abigail. “And you.”

“That one’s not worth your time,” said Gus. “She isn’t even part of their group.”

Carver ran fingers through Abigail’s long dark hair, sliding it beneath his nose. “Is that so? Or are you trying to protect her?”

Gus snorted, but the humour didn’t reach his eyes.

A look of delight spread across Carver’s face. “Jimmy, take them both to the doctor’s office. I’ll be along later. And remember, you lay a finger on them and you’re dead. I get first dip.”

With that, Jimmy shoved the pair forward, down a sterile white corridor and into a vast open area. The stench of death and decay became overwhelming, matched by the spatter on the walls and the floor. The macabre graffiti consisted of brain matter, old brown blood, and fresh red splats. Whoops and hollers accompanied them from the metal walkway above.

“Fresh meat!”

“We gonna get some pussy tonight.”

“Jimmy, where are you taking that gash? Bring them up here!”

The crude outbursts and obscenities continued long after they left the hall, echoing through the corridor. Finally, they stopped outside a medical room, indicated by a green cross and a wall-mounted defibrillator.

“Get in.”

Jimmy shoved them into the room, one at a time, before following them inside. The office was of a conventional nature. A pine desk topped with a computer and keyboard occupied one side of the room, with an examination bed against another. Aside from a filing cabinet next to the door—in front of which Jimmy stood—there was nothing else of note, and certainly nothing they could use to free themselves.

Lisa motioned to the bed on the other side of the room. Jimmy stood with his arms crossed, watching the pair as they leaned against it.

“We’re going to be fine,” she whispered, her back to the sentinel at the door, who stood watching, smirking.

“Fine? They’re going to rape us.”

“I’m going to get us out of here before that happens.
